On this week’s video we visit the new Kounter Dining “experience” in downtown Rock Hill, SC. Chef Rob Masone tells Patti Mercer Kounter is The Unexpected With Interactive Inspired Cuisine. It’s also home of the famous 1961 Friendship 9 civil rights “sit in”. Watch this video to learn more about Kounter.
The location of Kounter restaurant made history in 1961. African American students from nearby Friendship Junior College staged a sit-in at the segregated lunch counter of McCrory’s Five and Dime which is now Kounter. These young men were immediately arrested after ordering their food and sentenced to pay a $100 fine spend 30 days in jail. The chairs at the counter the Friendship 9 sat in are still in place today.

Chef Rob Masone is obsessed with creating an immersive dining experience. He describes the experience as Fun and Funky.
